Torres del Pain and Puerto Natales

We got on the bus in Ushuia at some ungodly hour in the moring and we were on the road again – headed to Puerto natales in chile.

6204 – and on the sea – in a little gulf islands style ferry – with giant Antarctic style waves –felt a little ill, saw some leaping porpoises…

eventually hit land miraculously without having thrown up or drowned

after fighting with the bus company over some double booked seating – we managed to get to our destination late and night – and then in the morning we set out to find some transportation to Tores del Pain national park to see some crazy mountains. We were based in Puerto Natales - This was a very small, very windy, very dusty town. But full of character and a nice water front – if you could fight the wind to get down there

the park was about an hours drive from town – we are almost arrived at this point

I think this lake is in the park

Guanacos - a common animal in that area – go around in big family packs. They are food for the common preditor in the area: pumas!

Now we are definitely inside the park – those are the Tores (aka giant towers of rock) - getting wrapped up in clouds… with a great little waterfall in the foreground

They call this low growing shrub – mother-in-law’s pillow – its kinda covered in spikes…I guess there might be another name for it depending on how well you get along with your mother-in-law

fortuatous shot of a little bird about to take off

the tores from another angle

and another angle

and the same angle – a little farther away – in the background is a little hotel – there is quite a lot of tourism activity in the park – a lot of overnighter hikers come thorugh and say in varying degrees of accommodation from basic campsites to five star hotels if you can believe it…it kind of spoils the in the middle of the nowhere feeling of the park… but we wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for the ease of access so I guess I can’t complain.

another part of the park – these chunks of ice came of the glacier way way way in the background (top right corner)

back to town and our cozy little hostel – thanks to the pesticides they spray on the bedding, we only saw dead bedbugs! I always mean to take more pictures of the hostels but then I forget…this is the only one I got

Then we crossed the border back into Argentina – this is were the toildet men hang out at the border office
